Can cv axle cause no reverse?

So I have a 2001 Volvo v70 cross country AWD. I just bought it from somebody a few days ago. I was told it doesn’t go in reverse. I tried reverse and it didn’t engage. Instead it mad a horrible loud metal on metal clunking noise. It went into drive and all other gears perfectly. Apon test driving it I noticed while in drive I heard a similar metal on metal noise, in the passenger side wheel area, but a little slower. I found that the passenger cv joint/axle was completely disconnected from the transmission side and obviously the boot etc was worn. I’m currently fixing the cv axle. I’m waiting for new one to arrive tomorrow. Is it possible my broken cv axle is part of my no reverse issue?

That is strange, but I suppose it's possible until you tell us otherwise. I don't at all follow you on this:

"the passenger cv joint/axle was completely disconnected from the transmission side"

I am just having to guess what you saw. If the bolts were out of the pillow block bearing that holds the straight part of the axle, then yeah, I think there's a chance that'll fix it. However, that's a pretty violent thing to do to a car. I would be concerned about other damage.

I cannot imaging this effecting reverse but not drive.
