new key program

I just bought a new/used key from ebay for my 09 C70. $200 bucks to get it programed at Volvo? What the? Are you kidding me? Do I HAVE to take it to Volvo Dealership? Or can I take it somewhere else. I refuse to take the car to the dealership.....

Nope it has to be done at a dealership and are you sure the key is new?

the key is a few months old. I think it has been programed already. The car was totaled. can they reprogram a key?

damien360 Jan 24, 2015 08:15 PM

Unless they erased the key from the original car im almost positive you won't be able to program that key to your car.

how does one erase a programed key?

damien360 Jan 25, 2015 02:08 PM

Through VIDA and chances are if they talked the car they didn't erase it. My best guess is that you won't be able to program that key

so, once again. How does one erase a programed key? If the dealer can program a key, shouldn't they be able to erase any key to begin with? Help me under stand this process. What is VIDA?

damien360 Jan 25, 2015 10:13 PM

Through VIDA. VIDA is the diagnostic system that is used at volvo dealers. The only way to erase keys would be connect to the original car. With that car totalled that isn't going to be possible. You are going to have to be another key, preferably at the dealer so you will know its new.

I am familiar with the Volvo key arrangement up to my wife's 2007 XC90. And my 2004 V70 likewise came with a valet key and two remote openers each with a swing out key which turns a cylinder in the ignition lock, and can be inserted to turn the lock in the driver side door. I am aware that newer arrangements allow remote sensing of the key by the ignition system in which the operator just has to have the 'key' on his person.

What kind of lock does your vehicle have? Does your 2009 have pushbutton starting? Is your ignition and are your doors operated by traditional locks or is it electronic?

What exactly did you purchase off Ebay?

damien360 Jan 26, 2015 07:28 PM

C70s never came with push start ignitions

I bought the key from ebay for $30 bucks. after my research, the owner refunded my $30. He kept the key and I gave him positive feedback.
