Water Pump

2001 V70 T5 here. 150K miles. Properly maintained. Lost coolant today and had it towed home. No start. Engine turns, no water on the dipstick. Looks like we lost the water pump. Filling the coolant leaks out immediately at the water pump.

Question...is the water pump linked to the timing belt? If we lose the water pump, will we throw the timing belt also?

Engine turns, but there is no compression.

Thanks in advance for your help.

The water pump gets its power from the timing belt but as I understand it, when the water pump fails it usually fails "internally" i.e. it still gets power but its internals no longer do the job of pumping.

Unfortunately, in order to replace the pump it does require removing the timing belt, etc so you may want to consider replacing the belt itself, and the tensioner while you are at it. Hope this helps. Given the higher mileage I would take a good luck at each of the cam seals (and potentially the crank seal) while you are in there too. I would be very tempted to replace those while everything is off.
