Default 2007 xc70 transmission hard shift / clunking

my wife is experiencing a ‘hard shift’ of sudden change of gears primarily between 1st and 2nd causing the car to really clunk and lurch quite dramatically. It was happening infrequently but now seems increasingly common

any ideas? Is it a common problem? Hoping it may just be a fluid issue and not a transmission replacement!!
thanks

It is a very common problem. I've helped dozens of people in this forum solve the issue inexpensively.

PM me for more information.

BTW - you can run an oil tanker's worth of fluid through that thing and it WILL NOT CHANGE THE SHIFTING PROBLEM.

Curious if you had your 'clunk' fixed? I have a 2002 with 90,000 miles and have had the clunk for a few years and decided to live with it - assuming that the cost of the fix doesn't make sense for a +/- 16 y.o car.

thanks

The fix is not that big of a deal. The hard shifting will eventually damage the transmission. For about $200 you can DIY.

By the way we experienced the clunk for a few years
the most recent symptoms were similar to that of revving the car in neutral and then dropping it into first...literally spinning the wheels on some ocassions

i would have put up with the clunk but the wife tows the kids around and I felt it was a matter of safety

traded it for a 2013 xc90 R design TD 5

very happy

PM me and we can discuss. I no longer provide this support on the board since several armchair mechanics tear me apart when I attempt to help.

Hi Tony1963,
I've just joined this forum and noticed that you have a fix for the harsh shift 1st - 2nd. Can I please ask is it fixable via cleaning out the solenoids?
Thanks in advance for your help!
Cheers Shifty

Hi Jennifer, I was reasonably lucky in that my vehicle had only travelled 110,000kms so the transmission was in good condition. The problem is with the 3 Linear solenoids (black, green and blue) If the fluid is not changed regularly they gum up and stick when the transmission gets hot.
if you look on YouTube there are several videos of people with the same issues and how to fix it. Do Not try and repair the solenoids, replace with new ones. If your vehicle has travelled over 250,000kms this may not be the only problem with the transmission as bushes will also have wear and tear.
If you replace the linear solenoids and transmission fluid it should go a long way to resolving the harsh shifting issues.
Good luck, Cheers Shifty

Shifty,

My clunk is happening when we pull up to a stop sign. do you think this would be the same fix? I have a 2006 XC90 and we just turned 100,000 miles.

Thanks
Bob
