2011 XC70 Rear Brakes

How does one retract the piston to replace the pads on the rear brakes of a 2011 XC70? I tried pushing it back into the caliper using a threaded piston pusher tool (Lyle, I think) but without success. The piston appears to have a screw-in head on it similar to some Ford's I've dealt with, but I can't get it to turn either direction to retract.

I've searched the forums and YouTube and found videos, etc., but nothing I've found shows what I'm looking for on the model of car that I have apart in my garage at this moment that my wife has to drive to work tomorrow!

Can someone help me, please?

Thanks very much,

Lynn B.

Never mind, figured it out finally.

Thanks anyway, guys.

What did you end up doing to retract it ??

Used channel locks and needle nosed ViceGrips to rotate the piston head while pushing on it with a regular threaded piston pusher. After I figured out what would work, it took most of an hour to get the thing retracted. A slow process, but it worked. Finished that wheel, hit Ebay, ordered a universal kit to do the rest of the wheels and everything else in the world. Tracking info sez it's out for delivery. If it gets here soon enough, I'll finish the job today. If not, then this weekend. Thanks for asking. I appreciate your interest. Cool avatar, BTW.

Parking Brake Is Not Fully Disengaged! Requires Service!

Just finished replacing the other set of rear pads on the 2011 XC70 3.2. No issues, but put it back together and now I have the warning above with the warning bell and everything.

I didn't touch the parking brake. What is going on here? How do I fix this?

Thanks much,

Lynn B.

If all I need to do is clear the code and the warning goes away, do I need a parking brake trouble code reader/eraser? Found one online for $65 or so. Is this what I need?

Thanks much,

Lynn B.

I assume you have electronic parking brake? If so, it was caused by not putting it in service mode when doing the brakes.

What is Sevice Mode?

Figured that out, too. If one backs up and stops enough, the mechanism will reset itself. The error warning goes away and that annoying bell stops dinging.

Now, what is service mode, and how does one engage it?
