Default Transmission Fluid ATF

Hello all. I am going to do a Transmission Flush on my '02 XC70. I have seen many posts on fluids. I know the Mobile ATF 3309 is approved for this car.
I am curious about the Mobile ATF Synthetic Oil like he is using here at this link:
Also would anyone use an inline filter like he is using at the above link?

I am also going to purchase the flush kit here: Automatic Transmission Flush Hose Kit

Thanks

No issue with the inline filter, but that fluid is NOT 3309 compatible. Do NOT use it. Either get Mobile 3309, Toyota Type T-IV, or check your owners manual for the Volvo number and use a fluid that says specifically that it is compatible with your car's requirement. My owners manual calls for Volvo 1161540, and Valvoline Max Life Synthetic fluid states it is 1161540 compatible, so that is what I used for my last fluid change. It can usually be found at Walmart for just under $5 a qt. What a bargain for a full syn fluid! I have put a thousand miles on since my last drain/fill. The shifts are very smooth and a previous flare from 2-3rd is all but gone.

If you don't buy it from Volvo or Toyota, it better say 3309 on it. Volvo transmissions don't use synthetic.

That is certainly an interesting position, but not one shared by all Volvo mechanics. After reading through the entire stickied S60 transmission fluid thread (yes, all 30 pages) I opted to do a drain/fill with Valvoline Maxlife Synthetic ATF because one of the listings for compatibility on the bottle was exactly the same as the spec listed in my owners manual for my AW trans. 2,500 miles later and the initial improvements in performance are still there and I am going to do another drain/fill in another 2,500 miles. I will report the results in that thread after it is done. Bottom line...make damn sure the fluid you use is compatible to your specific car, and there are multiple Volvo specs, so don't look for it to just say Volvo.

There are not multiple Volvo specs for those transmissions. It has to be JWS3309 compatible. That's it. There is a bulletin about it. Other fluids have not been evaluated by AW or Volvo.

Agreed. I was only saying to check the owners manual because not everyone who ventures into this thread will have an AW trans. My owners manual calls for Volvo 1161540 trans fluid, which the Valvoline Maxlife Synthetic is compatible with, so it would also be JWS3309 compatible. It is also listed as compatible with several other Volvo spec fluids. In addition there is another Valvoline Import Synthetic fluid (blue bottle) that lists several other Volvo specs it is compatible with, but the 1161540 is not listed there, so that fluid would not be JWS3309 compatible. The JWS3309 spec is darn hard to find listed out in the market anywhere and nearly as impossible to find on the shelf, while the Valvoline Maxlife is easy to find everywhere, so since it is compatible and easy to find I was simply pointing that out with the caveat that anyone who sees my reply should make sure to check their owners manual.

Just looked at my manual and it also calls for 1161540, but mine says 1161540-B. Any idea if that makes a difference?

Gotcha. Since this is posted in the 2001-2013 (which should actually be changed to just be P2s now), and the P2s use JWS3309, I was assuming someone looking here would have a P2 XC70.

Don't worry about the "B".

Just completed 2 drains and refill on XC60 T6 using Penrite ATF LV Full Synthetic which is a superior replacement for JWS 3309 fluid. Although a 2009 build, car has only traveled 75000 Kms. Shift patterns and smoothness has improved noticeably. Very happy with outcome.
