Smile 1800 cam timing

Good day fellow 1800 owners ! I am a fifty rear veteran of dealing with MGs but I have spent a bit of time on the earlier Volvos and I am stumped by something. The subject car is a 1968 P1800. The thing is idling pretty well but has very low power from a start and spits back through the carbs from time to time. I have checked the carbs, making a minor repair, the valve clearances, completely rebuilt the distributor, and have run compression tests, all being about 118 to 129 PSI. My next thought is cam timing. Where would I find the correct figures, and is there a reasonably accurate way of telling whether the cam chain has jumped a tooth?
