Default Beefing up a '97 960 Wagon?

Hey guys!
So I'm new to doing work on cars and my knowledge is slim, so forgive me if I don't understand a whole lot. Do any of you trained professionals or veteran mechanics have suggestions on how to better utilize the power that the stock I-6 can put out? When I full-throttle my car, it seems like there are some serious manufacturer bottlenecks that keep the beast engine from maximizing its performance. Where would be a good place to start? (Keep in mind that I'm a college student with limited funds)

Thanks for your sage advice!

The engine is well engineered as is. Attempting to modify the engine will only result in profit for aftermarket parts suppliers and you wasting your time.
