1999 s70 timing question

Hey, new to the forum, so if this is in the wrong place let me know or feel free to move it. Thanks!

I have a 1999 volvo s70 2.4T I picked up recently for relatively cheap. This is my first volvo, but not my first time under the hood of a car. Long story short the head ended up being warped, so I picked up another, got it machined, and dropped it on. I went to start it the other night and all it did was crank. My first thought was that the timing was off. Being a newbie to DOHC, when I pulled the gears off the cams, I didnt check to see where the marks were at as a reference for reinstallion. Also, when pulling the cams out of the head I didnt look to see where/how they were situated, so when I put it all back together I had nothing to go on when I tried to reset the timing. How would I go about getting the timing back on track? Engine sounded ok while cranking, so hoping I didnt bend any valves :/

You need a special tool set to time it. And unless you are very lucky to have randomly set both cams and the crank in the correct position, you bent valves.

Thanks for the reply. Ok, but if i did have the crank and cams in the correct positions, it would have started correct? looks like Ill be pulling the head back off to check valves and replace them if needed. Then ill set timing the right way with the right tools

If the timing was correct, then it should start (assuming the rest of the job was done correctly).
