2188 engine code 2005 v70
Car been running great, Installed new air filter and fuel filter. Now it keeps crapping out every day or two on a start up ,like ive got water in my fuel. Code reader say 101 and 2188. Checked all hoses and all that and no visible issues. All turbo pipes seem tight and right. So frustrating. Any ideas? Fuel pump? Injectors? Car has 110,0oo and is in great condition. Ive owned it for 2 weeks now and its kinda disappointing. I'm sure it needs the flame trap / pcv kit which I have. Was going to do that soon. New plugs purchased today and gonna start with that. UGH!!

P2188 is a fuel trim error saying the system is rich. Typical causes can be air leaks (you inspected the vacuum lines and turbo pipes - a good start) or intake air restrictions (how's that air filter look), exhaust leaks (any puffy noises?) or even a dirty intake. I'd probably add a can of CRC MAF cleaner and an OEM air filter to your shopping list and clean the MAF and intake/throttle body and throw in the new air filter as part of your stage 0 tune baseline to see if that clears the code.

Has brand new air filter and fuel filter and MAF new. No exhaust leaks that i hear . Intake is my next guess. Haven't looked. I have new plugs ready to go as well. Maybe a bad coil pack? It's so random when it dies. Usually at start up. But today I was getting rough idle at stop lights. So i have some trouble shooting to go. Wish it wasn't raining..

Update still no change. New MAF installed , new air filter, new ECT. New gas filter. All hoses checked. Reset by unhooking battery. Got about 100 miles before check engine came on. Then next start up it stumbles a bit some rough idle and then it runs fine and CEL still on. Friend will bring me his expensive code reader to try. Still getting 0101 and 2188. About ready to go to dealer!!! So frustrating

You will probably need to have a smoke test done to check for hard to find air leaks (probably would have been a good idea to do that before replacing the MAF ) leaks can be around gaskets, in the intake tubing in hard to spot locations, vacuum lines etc. That's likely what the dealer or an indy shop would do next... PS - unhooking the battery will not remove codes stored in the computer, you need a scanner to view and clear the OBD2 codes.

I'm thinking that too. I have put a shop quality scanner on it and done that with the light coming back on. Still getting 101/2188 codes. Ran really rough yesterday. Code reader said it could be , injector ,MAF, loose hose, pcm. Looks like dealer its is , I give up.Thanks for the advice...

UPDATE #2!!! SUPER GOOD NEWS. BELEIVE IT OR NOT MY ISSUES WITH ALL THESE "CEL" Codes was so darn simple I'm speechless . It was the DARN spark plugs. After checking everything under the hood 10 times with all the great advice givin it was something that simple. APPARENTLY the car ( 110,000 miles), had never had a plug and coil pack change. So after changing all the plugs and coil packs , the car now runs virtually like new and the CEL has not returned. The old plugs were worn down to the porcelain . The gap was.055 on each plug . Stock is .028. So lesson here is the most obvious could be the culprit. I was one day away from going to a dealer. Which would have cost me way more than plugs and coil packs. Even though the code reader indicated something different the problem is all gone
Thanks ye all!!! Gonna enjoy knowing it runs like a Volvo should. Complete tune up done. Now just have to eventually do the PCV flame trap preventive maintainence job.
