You remove the nut on the outside of the car.It is on the top of the mast assembly. It is a 5/8 side wrench.
Then turn on the radio and it will feed the old one out. Then you shove the enw one in as much as you can. Then turn the radio off and it will pull the new one in. Don't worry if it doesn't go in all the way install the nut and turn it on and off again and it will fix itself.

I pulled mine off this morning and when it came up, only about 18" of plastic came with it. I think the plastic cable is broken off inside. What's the best way to get the old cable out in order to replace the whole mast?

When I had trouble with mine I just replaced the whole assembly. Bought one on e-bay from Orange County Volvo for $92.00. It was really easy to replace the assemble. The phone number is 1-866-415-0242.

In the case of a broken off piece staying behind that is pretty easy to fix also. You need to remove the antenna unit. A few screws hold it in the trunk area and a wire connector. The housing comes apart with 3 or 4 screws and 1 nut. You can pull out the broken piece and reassemble. Installing the new mast is as Tech described. Turn on radio, shove mast in with the teeth towards the front of the car. Shut radio off and it will suck the mast in.
