Changing inner tie rod? 1987 240

ive got an 87' Volvo 240 and I want to change the inner tie rod. How do you do that ?

First you have to separate the connection between the inner and outer. Here's where you count the turns that it takes to separate them so that when you get it back together the alignment is "close". However, now-a-days, I've seen replacement parts that are slightly longer/shorter than what was on the car so you'll probably need an alignment anyway.

Once you disconnect the two from each other, you have to remove the boot on that end of the steering rack. Typically there is a compression clamp so you'll end up destroying that getting it off. Then, slide off the boot.

You will see that the inner tie rod has a boss at the end and it actually threads into the end of the rack. Depending upon how it is designed, you can use a special tool, large wrench or I have used pipe wrenches on them to take them out. They reinstall the opposite of removal.

My suggestion is to get a new boot and clamp if it doesn't come with your inner tie rod.
