Coding and Programming electronics with OBD2?
Hi all - I have a '08 V70, and a BMW 128i and recently began learning about coding the BMW. There are tonnes of cool electronic "tricks" you can code into the BMWs using a wired or wireless (Bluetooth/Wifi) OBD2 dongle and really comprehensive iPhone/Android apps.
For example, some of the feature you can code the BMW to do are: 1) active headlights (this is a BMW Europe thing that is turned off in NA) 2) long press lock on remote for windows up 3) digital km/hr on display 4) auto unlock doors when ignition off (no double pull on inside door handle) 5) lower mirrors in reverse - so see curb 6) Sunroof closes automatically with rain sensor 7) auto windows up while opening door 8) ding off when key in and door open .. and tonnes more I'd love to do these kind of coding changes to my V70 as well, but can't find any posts or reference to this being done in the Volvo Forums. Does anyone know about this? or can point me to active discussions? Thanks much |
Its definitely fun stuff to play with. I haven't played with manufacturer specific codes yet so I can't say how much I will be able to help, if your looking for general starting points I should be able to point you in the right direction.
What language/platform are you planning on coding? A big issue might be trying to figure out what commands are needed to get those non-standard functions to work, as this information isn't typically free from manufacturers. |
Hi fourstroke,
For the BMW, it's made really simple through the apps, so "coding" is no longer an appropriate term for the activity. Although, just a few years ago, this is how the BMW community did it. Now though the "coding" is all prepared in simple app based on/off switches anyone can use. ($50 iPhone app BMWhat/Carly for BMW). I'd prefer to not do the actual coding, but I'm game for a challenge too. For the BMW folks many of the codes are already preprogrammed by BMW, it's just a matter of turning them on. Some were created for cars destined for other jurisdiction, others are options that are not turned on, and some were created for performance versions of the cars (BMW M cars) that aren't activated on regular versions. Have you ever heard of this for Volvo? |
Could this provide what I'm looking for?

You need VIDA and a DiCE to change any programable parameters. But the things you can change is fairly limited.

Autocom does not work with volvo well. You need DICE. Depending on you vehicle you can do interesting stuff with it.

Has anyone ever compiled a list of things you can change in DICE? |
The programmable parameters vary from year to year. It isn't much.
