HEICO S40R

HEICO S40R
For you S40 mavens, check out the 27 March issue of Autoweek! Apparently Volvo in conjunction with HEICO has put together a 348 hp S40 using the T5 engine and a 17.4 psi Borg Warner turbocharger. The S60R 'normal' engine uses a 14.5 psi turbo. So, what Volvo is playing with is a S60R engine with a big air box, big turbo, big intercooler, big wastegate, big down pipe and a Quaife diff. All this is good for 160 + MPH! HEICO is going to campaign the S40R at Nurburgring this June in the 24 hour race. Oh, did I mention the big brakes?
Of note is the fact that apparently Volvo IS getting press now as already this year there must have been at least a dozen articles re: Volvos in Autoweek. Who knows............perhaps Volvo in a few years will take on the Euro runners and have a competitive rear driver!
TECH is going to have to start pumping up the power in his Mustang??

RE: HEICO S40R
Gordon, Heico calls it a HS4 Odin and the price for them to make one up for you is "around $150,000.00". That's a lot of money for a small auto but................... It does 0 to 62 MPH in 5.4 seconds. There is a lot of carbon fibre and some hefty brakes. For a lot less 'though, you can get a Mitsubishi turbo or a Subaru WRX that has the same performance numbers. What I enjoyed seeing was the fact that Volvo is "getting with it". It won't be long Gordon before I agree with your prediction that Volvo will be up there with the BMW................?
Incidentaly the WRX is $24,520.00................. You could buy six of them for the same money............or one and have enough for an exoctic Euro Italian job.........

RE: HEICO S40R
Reference: AUTOMOBILE, April 2006. That was the price for a 2002 when it first broke the scene. 0 to 60 in 5.7 seconds. Incidentally, there is a huge difference between 0 to 60 in 6 seconds and 0 to 60 in 5.5 seconds...............a huge difference! One half of a second is not that easily obtainable. At any rate, purchase the April AUTOMOBILE. Gordon, there are two photos of the s40 in the 27 March AUTOWEEK. Lastly, I have sent TECH some photos of my 0 to 60 4 cylinder BMW that obtains that number in a tad under 5.5 seconds. All the reciprocating mass is titanium. It is quite an automobile and you don't want to know what amount of money I have spent on it over the years.

RE: HEICO S40R
I am not sure about the hugeness (?) of the difference between a 5.5 sec. quarter and a 6 second quarter, but somewhere in my distant and misspent youth there is a memory of about a 1/2 sec. gain in quarter mile time for every 100 pounds of static wieght you could peel off a car- up to a certain horsepower to weight limit. I expect this hot S40 has no excess weight at all but is set up for road courses and not quarter mile. I still would like to drive a 348 hp S40-talk about a permanent smile on your face. Lol.BJ

$150,000 to go 0-62 in 5.4 sec? By a Mitsubishi Evo, Subaru WRX STI at $35,000 and $34,000 that both do 0-60 in under 5.0 sec, and buy a Z06 Corvette $69,000 and still have some change.

I agree, its nice to see Volvo DOWN WIT IT, but they need a reality check if those numbers are right....

RE: HEICO S40R
HOCBJ, those were not 1/4 mile times but 0 to 60 MPH. And yes, that is a track car set for sedan racing. I guess exclusivity has its price!!! You're right..........it would be a thrill to pilot that rocket for a hot lap or two. At any rate you should check out the magazine for the full article and photos.............. The Volvo does not look lash-up at all............it's a professionally built racer. The two S60Rs that Volvo campaigned last year were an abysimal flop as they...........I don't think..........ever finished a race as they could not keep them together. Volvo teams finally gave up on them because of the cost of keeping them together. Let's hope the 40 series does better. I'll keep you posted when I hear.

RE: HEICO S40R
The Volvo club magazine had a great article last summer on the two 60's. Your'e right, they looked great and I felt bad that the reliability was so bad as it looked like they had the right drivers. It's a real let down when your auto destructs during a race!
Now, just to change things a tad............you ought to see the new Hartge BMW 130i! The auto will set you back at least $100,000.00 but 0 to 62 MPH in 4.6 seconds!! Top speed of 186 MPH!! This is a serious auto with seats from a M3 CSL. Rear diff from a M3 with a 3.25 rear ratio (hence the top end). Hartge/Bilstein suspension with 19 inch Hartge wheels. Continental tyres with 15 inch drilled rotors with 8 piston calipers! This of course is rear wheel drive so no torque steer. Hartge is the premier German tuner.........I know as I have a Hartge H-3 and it is a blast!! Lastly...........did I mention that Hartge dropped in a M62 engine.............5 liter over bore V8. Now that is a package!!
Reg.
p.s. If you want to see it pick up 27 March Autoweek.
