The Last Straw?
 

I just read that, rather than developing their own system, the Volvo Polestar division has signed on with Google to source in-car display systems. Remarks from Volvo's Chairman suggests that this is likely to be a company-wide practice.

What you can expect:

The navigation system will feed you a continuous stream of ads for restaurants, coffee shops, fast food vendors, shopping malls and big box establishments along your route. There will be no option to turn this off.

A low fuel warning will be accompanied by ads for nearby gas stations

The "time to take a break" coffee cup warning will be replaced by directions to the nearest convenience store, coffee shop or fast food emporium

Any warning light, malfunction or approaching service reminder will carry an ad for the nearest dealer.

The system will follow your route, take note of stops, use GPS to identify probable merchants and feed that information along with your contact information, to vendors

Your insurance company will be able to buy data on your trips, routes, mileage and speed vs limits.

Your choice of radio stations will become a matter of public record, available to advertisers.

You will get messages like "You're in the HEAP 'O JUNK shopping mall - WeScamYou is having a 20% off sale, why not stop in?"

Etc. etc>
