No key for locking lug nuts
Bought a used 2006 Volvo XC90 that has locking lug nuts and no key was included. Suggestions on how to solve this issue are greatly welcomed!:(

Posting a picture would be helpful but in most cases is isn't something you can DIY. You'll likely need to take it to a tire show or independent mechanic for them to remove them. doesn't hurt to call around for an estimate. If you get a photo of them and can ID them you can try to see if the manufacturer has a key available. |
If they are Volvo, see if the dealer has their master set still in tact. Then they can find the one to order, or remove them and put regular studs on.

Maybe this will help. Matco, et. al., sell locking lug nut/bolt removal tools. They're left hand female tapered threads in a socket that you place over the locking nut, whack once with a hammer to let it get a bite, then just remove the locking nut with an impact wrench. I had the same problem years ago. Actually, I think I got my set at Advance Auto Parts. I believe three different sizes of removers come on the blister pack card. Theoretically, you can then steal any set of wheels you want. :)
Anyway, I got the locking nuts off and could rotate my tires. Bought a new set of locks, put the new key for it in the glove box and got on with my life. Hope you can do the same. Check the chain auto stores first, then the tool vendors. They chain store versions will be much less expensive. |
