rear Brake pads really that much? $$
I recently went in for an oil change for my 1999 volvo s70. i was told that i needed several things done. Out of those things, the rear brake pads are my main concern for now. Brake pads alone arent that expensive but i was told that the total would be 248.90. this is for the brake pad kit 51.86, service kit 19.22, brake cleaner 4.56, silicone grease 33.26 and of course labor 119.71. apart from labor. is everything really needed? i mean can't i just buy brake pads from an autozone from 20-60bux. do i need this service kit? brake pad kit i assume are just the brake pads. please help! this is coming from the bayridge volvo dealer in brooklyn ny. ive nvr taken the car to the actual dealer before for anywork but i lived in texas and had a mechanic that i trusted for any issues and now that i have moved to ny. i decided id go to the dealer

Depending on the quality of the pads they should run $30 to $75 ans far as the labor, if you dont have the ability to do it yourself remember dealer labor costs are always crazy.. Id check midas, I used to being my rotors (before I got the slotted and cross drilled rotors) to them to be cut for $10. The store mgr used to tell me they could do the whole service for $50. its worth a shot, ya know.

You can always do it yourself. Not much more than changing a tire.
Brake pads, rear, replacement instructions on a 1998 S70 Volvo, also 850
That's why we call them the stealer.

brake pads cost this much? pt 2
true i could TRY and do it myself. im not much of a mechanic. One thing that i forgot to mention is that I did call and ask if i needed to have the rotors changed and volvo told me no. so maybe volvo just charges a hell of a lot b/c the i stopped by a few other places to ask about having the brake pads changed and one was the same price including rotors and the other was only a quarter of the price for doing the pads.. im out of town during the week everyweek and when at home on the weekends i just want to sleep. lol the so i could learn to change it myself but only if its the brake pads. im not sure why this brake grease cost 40bux and still not sure what the service kit is and the brake pad kit is

With the instructions I posted you can do each side in less than 30 minutes. I'm sure their $40 grease is some special stuff they they get from Mars when the shuttle passes by there once every 5 years. Volvo brakes usually squeal if you don't put something on the shims between the pads and the brake caliper piston. I've used grease, silicone, gasket sealer, etc. Something to interrupt the harmonic humm.
