RE: Removing the EMBLEMS

Oh BTW, the S80 emblem came off no problem with hairdryer. Looks like Volvo emblem had already fallen off and previous owner stuck it back on with crazy glue. :smack: I got it off but bug and tar remover didnt do crap and I accidentally scratched the car with a plastic pry tool I was using to scrape. I then switched to acetone and literaly wiped the remaining glue off. Unfortunately the damage had already been done and I now have to paint the back of the car. :(

It was like I was staring in an episode of "when debadging goes wrong" LOL.

Lessons learned:
1) even a plastic tool can scratch you paint
2) bug and tar remover doesnt do sh!t for krazy glue, use acetone (then wash car because I'm sure its not good for the clear coat).

Looks good!!

RE: Removing the EMBLEMS

I used a little touch-up paint on the scratches and buffed the whole area. Doesn't look too bad... now for the front grill though. After debadging think I'll mask off the chrome/plastic around the perimeter and just paint the vertical bars black. Gotta keep a little bling. :)

Was thinking it might be fun to rebadge the car too. Saw a Ferrari-like yellow badge that when you got up close had a moose instead of a stallion on it. LOL

I liked the Krylon Fusion paint I used on my center caps so much went ahead and did like tech and blacked out my front grille too. Came out really nice. Masked off perimeter chrome to keep a little bling. ;) Will post before/after pics later...

id like to see the grill pics, curious how it shows the emblem

Probably should have used a flat black paint, as you can kinda still see where emblem was, I guess because the glossy edges reflect too much light. But that Krylon Fusion paint is just so easy to work with on plastic... anywho. I'm completely badgeless now. ;) No Ferrari or Lambo spoof emblems either. :D LOL

Forgot the before pic.

Changed out my side marker lenses with clear ones too.

And here's a close-up of that Fusion paint on my wheel center caps.

Think I'm gonna cut a piece of mesh and bolt it over top of center part of grille. Cutting it to just the right size will be biggest challenge I guess. I also forgot to mention I used a mini-hacksaw to cut out the center mount points for emblem before painting, so there's no going back. But other than indentation you really can't tell. So hopefully with silver mesh over top old slash should become completely invisible. Unfortunately all the generic pieces I find on ebay are diamond shaped. Really wanted honeycomb, but might have to compromise at this point. Guess I can always re-do it later if I don't like it.

I got to thinkin'-- scary, I know -- that it'd be really hard to get metal to sit down right on the grille's curved surface. And since the rest of it was just painted plastic, why not use plastic mesh. So started looking around and there was this kiddie/doggie gate thing in one of the doorways with circular mesh instead of diamond shaped plastic mesh like all the others -- i don't recall where it came from... anywho. Half a can of Krylon Fusion paint and nine black cable ties later and I've got a one-of-a-kind look goin' on. :)

Will take a pic in AM.

Crito 02-01-2009 09:20 AM

Looks even better in daylight. Not exactly honeycomb but, considering how scarce customizing products are for the S80, close enough for me. ;)

Just don't tell anyone I improvised and didn't fork over $200-$300 for a replacement or bolt-over. Total cost of materials: about $15. :D LOL

I like it the look is very cool!!!

Crito 02-01-2009 11:19 AM

Thanks tech. I used these black cable ties to secure it.

They ended up being exactly as glossy as the Fusion paint, so you can't see them at all. They'll also be easy to cut off should I stumble across some honeycomb plastic mesh.

I'm running out of things to fix/mod now though. :( Maybe a wing/spoiler wasn't such a bad idea after all... hmm... :D LOL

That looks Sweet!!!! I love the unique look!!

hi

It's very easy actually and I've done it on my car.

What you need:

1. Adhesive remover - Goo Gone
2. Hair Dryer
3. Fishing line

Steps:

1. To make it easier, park your car in the sun or pre-heat the emblem with hair dryer
2. Apply adhesive remover
3. Remove the emblem with the help of the fishing line. Place it in between the emblem and the body of the car and slide it downward.

You may have to repeat steps 1 and 2 before it comes off.

There maybe some residue of the glue left. Again, use adhesive remover.

Hope it helps!

All except the Volvo emblem that is on the sides of the cars like on the 850's without sidemarkers. There is a hole behind them, but you can remove the emblem the same way. Then put sidemarkers in the spot.

I just debadged the rear of my 1998 V70 but held off on the single piece "volvo" emblems on both sides on the front quarters for fear they had screws and therefore holes that would be left by the emblems removal. Anyone done this on a similar year/model? Were you left with holes?

gilber33 02-28-2010 07:55 PM

They don't have screws, they pop off like the other ones, but those "Volvo" emblems are covering where the sidemarkers would usually go, so yes, there would be holes.
