Winter wheels & tires

Just got 1st Volvo. Its a V70 T5 from 06. It has 17" wheels and 45 aspect tires, all season rated. As per manual, I'm planning on a set of winter tires mounted on their own wheels as the road surfaces get pothole trashed here in Michigan. Don't think the tires have quite enough sidewall to defend the wheels against our roads.

Question: (and I did look to see if this had been posted before): Am I better off getting 16" wheels with 55 aspect winter tires (should be about the same diameter) or spending much more $$$ and using 17" wheels?

Question: Any recommendations for tire brand/model? Deep snow isn't usually a problem where I live; and if it were I'd have all wheel drive.

I would do the 16in and up the tire profile.
More rubber to absorb the potholes the better.
I dont live near snow, so cant recommend much.

Good luck.

I have a C30 and just did this myself. Went from 215/45-18 to 205/55-16 wheels and tires.. Went with Firestone Winterforce Snows. Awesome in snow and ice so far. Local tire dealer hooked me up with a good deal. Tom
