first step is to get the codes from the check engine light. Some of the big autoparts stores like Autozone will rent/loan a code reader. I bought one for $39 at Harbor Freight which works just fine for the CEL engine codes. Second step is to inspect the vacuum hoses and intake boots to look for tears or missing caps etc. Once you have your codes if you see P030xs those are the misfires by cylinder number which can point to bad coils or plugs. Other fuel delivery/metering system components can cause misfires so you need to read the codes.
