My 5 year old, 32K miles 2019 XC60 A/C stopped working and took it to the dealer to fix. They are trying to charge $4,300 to fix it. They say they need to replace the "high side shradder valve evap" that is leaking. Vehicle if not under guaranty. Calle Volvo they offered covering parts only for approx $1,000 as good will. Dealer says needs 14 hours of labor for $3,300 as they say then need to take off the dashboard and for that the front seats. This sounds too much work for a relatively new car. Does this seem right? Anyone experienced something similar? This my have been my first and last Volvo to be frank.
the schrader valve is a port valve kind of like a tire valve. The killer is where they noted the evaporator is leaking. The evaporator is the radiator like part that is buried inside the dash that the air blows through to cool. To access/replace that, the entire dash will need to come apart (many hours of labor). Then there's the parts and work to vacuum out the system do a recharge etc. Given the cost, you may want a second opinion from an independent AC specialist.
PS - Kind of surprised that an evaporator would fail in 5 years - usually that happens when the AC condensation doesn't drain properly and the evap rusts from the outside in. So that should be checked out as well.
And yes, this problem was fairly common to 850s (mine included) with a similar 10-12 hours of labor :-)
