New to forum, and Volvos

Greetings everyone - I just purchased a 98 V70 GLT, and can't wait to start working on it! I know that sounds a little strange, but I got it for a song as it needs a fair amount of work to get back to where it should be. The most glaring issues are the front end: it needs tie rods and (I think) control arms - I'm told the ball joints needed to be replaced. First order of business will be the timing belt and water pump, the PO doesn't think it's ever had a timing belt replacement (yikes!), and it's got 146k miles. The engine runs well, and the transmission seem to be shifting ok, so I'm hoping that it won't take too much to get her back in shape.

I'm all new to Volvos, I was thinking about getting an Outback, or even a small truck or SUV so I can carry stuff, but trucks are too thirsty and the Subarus tend to rust (in addition to their reputation for head gasket failures). This V70 came along at just the right time, and having done some research before I bought it, I'm impressed with how accessible it is for a shade tree mechanic. I'm no expert wrencher, but if nothing else I'm looking forward to a fun project and learning experience. This may well be only the first Volvo in my garage! Its not an AWD but as a first Volvo I'm fine with that.

So, that's a quick intro from me, Dave - I'm from downstate New York, right near West Point. Looking forward to hearing from other owners, and if anyone has a parts car near me let me know...

Cheers,

Dave B.

Welcome to the Forum.

Sounds like you have a great project on your hands. Good luck with it and post up pictures during the process so we can see how it is going.
