Default Newbie Celebrating 25th Birthday of my 1986 240DL Wagon

Hello everyone,
I have just pulled out my 1986 Volvo 240 DL wagon out of five years of storage and after installing a new battery, he (his name is Bob) started right up! I've owned it since 1996 and it's been a trusty friend ever since. Because he isn't great in the snow, I put him in storage and bought VW Golf, but I was so attached to the Volvo, that I've kept him in storage ever since. I had to move out of the garage he was being stored in and my niece needs a car for getting to school and errands, so he gets to come out and play. Although he started, there are some other issues that need addressing, so I thought this forum would be helpful in getting him back in tip top shape. I look forward to communicating with the Volvo community!

Default Welcome to the forum

Goodboygary, welcome! You have come to the right place for help in those issues that you will have in your 25y/o car. I too have an '86 240 wagon. You will find that folks here and at parts places will refer to your car as a 245 (as in 240 with 5 doors). Do yourself a favor, though and search the 240/740/940 section first before asking a question re: a particular issue. Chances are, someone has already had that issue and there may be a lot of info with links, etc. to guide you to a resolution. And you should consider reviewing all posts from inception (you have to click the drop-down box to do this) But doing this will keep you up late for several nights!

Welcome to the forum.

I would drain all fluids and replace. Replace any belts, hoses, etc. as they tend to dry rot when not in use. Do a tune up, points, plugs, etc. Run a fuel cleaner through the system and check all bulbs to make sure you have brake lights, etc.

Glad to hear Bob is back on the road.
