Welcome to the forum.

I am not sure if they ever got to the East-end of the world either.

The 300s were very reliable but obviously couldn't swim long distances. Made in Holland as a follow-on to the Daf 66 when Volvo bought out that company, they seem to have stayed in the European market.

My brother-in-law had a 340 and started to worry when he reached 200,000 miles with only minor problems and normal servicing costs. He was convinced it wouldn't last much longer but did another 50,000 miles before he sold it.

There is a forum devoted to the 300 series at http://www.volvo300mania.com/.

It looks like a cross between the SAAB and a Renault.

It is cool looking though.

Visit the300 Mania site, link in my last post, and go to Gallery 4.

The 300 series started on the drawing board of the Daf motor company in Holland. When Volvo acquired a major share in Daf they took over the Daf 66rebadged as a Volvo with the notorious Variomatic continuously variable transmission which was mounted in the rear of the car and was nicknamed 'the rubber band gearbox' by people who did not like it. The 340 took over from the 66 with the CVTuntil a choice of boxes was made available in 1979. The manual box was still mounted in the rear, just forward of the rear axle, and was taken from the 240.

The 340 and 360 looked alike with the 340 coming out in 1976 with a 1.4 engine. In 1980 the 340 was given a choice of engines, 1.4 or 2.0. In the same year the 360 was introduced with a 2.0 engine. In the perverse way of motor manufacturers Volvo decided, in 1984, to introduce an alternative engine for the 360 so there was now a choice of 1.4 or 2.0.

In 1985 the 340 was given a choice of petrol or diesel engines but this was never carried over to the360.

Production of both models stopped in 1991 with the last two years of the 360 having only the 1.4 engine.
