Default Volvo V50 losing oil.

Hi, I purchased a used Volvo V50 2005 1.8 Petrol back in March 2021. Mileage is 120k. Seems to be losing a lot of oil recently. My local garage are very trustworthy and have gone over it comprehensively, however the engine is not showing any visible signs of a leak at all and both mechanic and I are a totally flummoxed. There's no evidence of any oil leaks on my path. I've recently had the gearbox oil seal replaced, as that was showing signs of a small leak once my mechanic had it on the ramp and the clutch has been replaced recently. However my mechanic (who is trustworthy and reliable) can't understand why I'm still having to top up with around a litre each week. There's no evidence of burn from the exhaust, no smoke. The dipstick is very odd though - always seems to show dry after a couple of days! I'm wondering if at some point that the dipstick has been replaced with a shorter model and it's giving me a false reading?
