I was given a 1982 Volvo 245 DL in May 2005. Thanks to Pierce, former moderator, I was able to purchase a new exhaust pipe several years ago. I have renewed the exhaust system, trailing arm bushings, brake calipers and brake safety switch. With 232k miles the vehicle still performs wonderfully although the transmission syncromesh in second gear seems a bit worn and the overdrive no longer functions.

My daily driver is a 1991 Olds Cutlass Calais with about 117k miles. It was given to me about 9 years ago, after having, with its then owner, survived a drivers-side altercation with a semi that dented the door and front fender and smeared off the rear view mirror (replaced). It has spent all of its life in upstate NY where it has been annually exposed to winter road salt. I'm currently installing a new fuel tank and intermediate exhaust pipe. The 2.5L 4 cyl. engine still runs well and the automatic transmission functions flawlessly. Despite my efforts rust and age are taking their toll and I am considering options for an eventual replacement.

Since I have experience maintaining Volvo 240 vehicles, having also briefly owned a '76 242, another Volvo 244 might make sense if parts are readily available. I have also been considering Toyota Camry and Corolla models as replacements.

I would very much appreciate advice on 240 parts availability and, in general, any thoughts that you might have about a replacement for my '91 Olds. I should add, that since I am nearing 80 years of age, I would especially appreciate a replacement vehicle with a reputation for reliability.
