I would not recommend a 45 year old Volvo (or any other 45 year old car) unless you had another car to drive and this 45 year old car was your toy and you just want something to continually spend money on.
If $5000 is your budget - find a Japanese car in that price range. There are many for sale on autotrader and other sites.

not overly rare but 240s kind of a cult following, particularly for DIY mechanics who like to tinker and fix the small stuff as needed. As 1970s cars go, the 240s are about as reliable as they get - but its still a 70s car where some parts may be hard to find. If you've never driven one you'll find the seats are very flat, the tires are small and the car doesn't corner that well and has kind of a firm ride. Great vision (like sitting in a green house..) and not all that quiet. Mechanically they are straight forward - if I recall the 78s had the Bosch K-Jet fuel injection (also used by VW, Audi, BMW etc) which is a fairly simple, reliable system. So in terms of desireability, it has some cachet value - usually to Volvo fans who's mom drove one - lol my mom's car was an 82 DL, which she traded for a 2000 S40 (my son's daily driver now)). Oh and did I mention it has about 100 HP on a good day? Not a fast car...merging onto a highway takes some planning and a long ramp!
