Wines (Your Favorties, Recommendations, Reviews)

Ok so we got a Scotch thread going and while there are only a few of us in there it is going nicely. So I decided to start a WINE thread for those who drink wine. So tell us your favorites, recommendations and give us some reviews as well if you can.

I start off the thread here.

I recently saw an old episode of Emeril's (The Essence of Emeril). He was cooking a piece of beef and he paired it with a few wines. One in particular was a Zinfandel. In particular it was from Orin Swift Cellars in the Napa Valley and the wine was called The Prisoner.

Now I searched High and Low for this wine in my state. No luck. My uncle found it in NY and he brought me a few bottles. I must say that it is very very good and I would recommend it to anyone who likes red wines. They just came out with the 2007 vintage and 2006 vintage is hard to find, but is still available if you look for it. I was drinking by the way the 2006 vintage.

Onto white wine, my other uncle is a big fan of La Crema 2006 Chardonnay from the Sanoma Coast. It is a wonderful white wine to drink before dinner.

Chateau Ste. Michelle wines are good. I personally like the Sauvingnon Blanc. Not sure of which years but any I have had have been good. If you are looking for softer reds to drink now the Louis Jadot Beaujolais Villages pairs is good. It is made to drink now.

One quick wine story. In the mid to late 80's I purchased a 1978 vintage Cabernet Sauvingnon. I was saving it for a major special occasion. Last year, 2007, I had made some spaghetti sauce one Saturday when my daughter and her boyfriend were home from college. My daughter yelled into the living room and asked my wife if she wanted her to open a bottle of wine and my wife said yes. Imagine my shock when I went into the kitchen and found my prize bottle of wine opened for spaghetti, and not some filet mignon or other prime cut of meat. I was so mad that it took me two glasses before I started enjoying the wine. By the way, it was the best bottle of Cabernet I have ever had.

Luckily in Argentina we have great beef and great red wine to go along with the beef. We do not need to import.

Any bottle that costs more than 5 dollars is very good! One of my favorites is Rutini.

I really enjoy red wine, merlots in particular. Two of my favorite reds are the Francis Coppola Merlot, bottled in Ca, and Gato Negro from Chile. Both are relatively inexpensive and taste great. The Francis Coppola is very smooth and has a flavor hint of vanilla, whereas the Gato Negro has a bit of a sharper taste with blackberries and tannins.
