Stern Drive Trim Problem

Hello,

Last summer I bottomed out on a rock. The trim moves up and down without a problem, but when it sits for long enough it lowers slowly. I have not seen any hydraulic fluid leaking from the pistons. I am not very mechanicly inclined, but my guess is that when I hit the bottom I could have broken a valve in the motor. Any suggestions for diagnosing and fixing the problem effieciently and correctly would be great.

Thanks,
Steve

RE: Stern Drive Trim Problem

Hello.

Not sure which stern drive you have but alot of the volvo trim rams have ballbearings and spirings in the piston of the ram which are designed to open when you hit something hard and allow the hydraulic fluid to pass the piston and the drive to lift. Sometimes thease bearings don't seal again correctly. The way to test the rams is toraise the drive to the top andsupport it (rope from the rear cleatsworks well). Then remove the two hydraulic pipes from the pump (note which waythey go)and blankoff the ends off withsutable fittings.Remove the rope and leave it for a day or two.

Hope this helps.
