Post 2006 S60R for sale

My daughter bought the vehicle at a low price because it has a salvage title due to hail damage, but it still looks good in royal blue. 185K miles and has a problem with the transmission - apparently common in this type of car, but I didn't know that until after I started researching the problem. It still drives well, but after the transmission gets hot it locks into 1 gear. Might be fixable by someone who is familiar with the issue.

I haven't been able to find any comparables out there, but Kelly Blue Book says a fair condition without a salvage title would have a private value of $3,848. Looking to get maybe $2000 out of it, but would consider any offer.

Can't say I'm surprised, but still - good to know. Can anyone shed light on the transmission issue?

You need to share more information about what the transmission is doing. Are you saying that you get a warning on the display that the transmission is hot?

you'd need to pull the transmission codes if possible, but not all code readers see all the modules so you may need a Volvo shop to scan. The automatics are computer controlled using solenoids to actuate the valves. Given your transmission is temperature sensitive, I'd look at the fluid color and level to start. Black means there's burn clutch material in there clogging veins and ports etc - its likely going to need replacing. Brown is normal. Red means somebody recently changed the fluid. Follow the correct procedure to check the fluid level, which varies as the transmission warms up. if all is good, then its likely one or more of the solenoids needs to be replaced. As the solenoids heat up they lose their magnetic force which means they can't operate the valves properly. The solenoids can be replaced at a reasonable price (at least when compared to the cost of finding and installing a replacement transmission. To start you need a proper tech diagnosis on any fault codes, and drop the pan to check for any debris and then get a quote for any recommended repairs. There are a few used transmissions listed on eBay in the $600 range, but I'd guess at the install cost in the $1500 range (but somebody can probably look up the book time to update my guess).

Installing a transmission in these cars is not too difficult. About four hours with air tools. They are easier to do on the jack stands than the lift, in my opinion.

The problem that I see is that it is a salvage car. I can't imagine anyone fixing it no matter how nice it looks. The original poster is trying to unload it so that should tell you something. Sorry but salvage cars need to run and drive otherwise the market kills them.
