A Few Shot Speakers

I tinted my windows yesterday and when I did, I removed the door panels. I was playing the radio while doing so and discovered that I have a few speakers that are shot. I knew I did, just was not 100% sure which ones unitl now.

I have a 850 R that has the top of the line Volvo stereo in it. The tweeters in the top of the dash are bad, also the speakers in the rear doors are bad. The tweeters in the dash are fried, totally. And the speakers in the rear door have bad tweeters and they clip under heavy bass input.

For some reason I thought the front and rear doors would have the same speakers but they do not. Maybe they have already been replaced onece, not sure, i'm not the original owner.

Anyway, I'm wondering if someone could guide me as to what I should do about these 4 speaker replacement? Should I go to the local junk yard, to volvo or some other place to replace these blow speakers?

Do you really want to replace old speakers with other old speakers? I would go to a reputable Car Audio place (not Best Buy or Circuit City) and see what is available at a reasonable price. I replaced the speakers in the front only on my 97 850 R and they sound fine. Pretty sure I got Boston Acoustic, but not certain. It's been a while.

I got the type with a mid and separate tweeter and put the mid in the door and the tweeter in the dash. I did not want to mess with anything that had crossovers. I have tendency to go overboard when I start doing audio replacement and I just wanted to replace blown speakers without spending a bunch of money.

The door speakers, front and rear, are 5.25". That size will fit but you will probably have to drill a couple of new holes to mount them. I haven't replaced the dash speakers so I don't know what size they are. I put in Pioneer speakers. Not too expensive and the sound was good enough for me. I'm like JimKW, I wasn't going to spend a ton of money on speakers.

+1 on that. I also used Bostons in my 850, but I got mine off ebay super cheap! Here's a few places you could look on but also like JimKW said, check best buy,etc..... Here's a few links for you!

So, out of 8 speakers, 4 are bad. Do I replace all 8 or just the 4 bad ones. I was thinking... if I got 4 new ones, they would not match the sound of the old ones???

Also, I'm using my Treo 650 to play music, MP3's. Is there a big difference in the sound quality of the cassette adapter vs the aux adapter.

That is up to you! If you can afford to replace all then do all. If you can only afford the 4 at least it's a start.I would do them in pairs thou! Meaning if you have one blown in the back Change out both back ones, not the left and yes on the right. On my 850 I have an adapter going thru the tape deck (cassette with a plug) for my Ipod. You can use the aux.jack but I wasnt going to do all that work. You will loose a little quality from tape deck but it shouldnt be anything major. My ipod still sounds clear thru the adaptor.

The front speakers are really the most important ones. I would put the best of the ones you have in the back and put new in the front. You want to have sound coming from the back, but you really listen to the front speakers almost exclusively. I was kind of surprised when the guy at the Car Audio store told me this. I was going to replace them all and he said it really wasn't necessary unless the back one are blown and making bad noises.

I have a 2002 S60. My driver door main speaker is out. How much would it be to just get a new stock speaker put in?

Thanks for the input. I would really like to know what brand and model of speakers to install. I shop better when I know what I'm looking for. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Well, depends on your budget! Pioneers are ok those can go between 50-100 bucks for the set. Clarity is ok, average speakers that are good for the price point! Or you could then upgrade to maybe MBquart, Kicker or Boston Acoustics. Those will go up in price because you just went up in speaker quality. Between 75-200 a set, depending on where you look. I Have Boston Acoustics, got for 50 a set on ebay. Very lucky on the price. Good luck on the search!

I put Boston Acoustic in mine also and they are good, not great but better than what was in there. Like I said earlier, I did not want to get too into this cause I would have ended up spending more than $1,000 putting in a complete new system. I controlled myself and just replaced the bad speakers. They sound fine and I like listening to music pretty loud when I listen to music. I mostly listen to talk radio when driving to and from work though. But when I do play my CD's the sound is fine. I like to crank up "Dark Side of the Moon" which can blow out your speakers if played too loud.
