98 S90 front end shaking
I have an S90 and when driving at 70mph and above the steering wheel and front end starts to vibrate/shake. Does anyone have any ideas, its quite scary when this happens? Can ball joints cause this? Thanks |
RE: 98 S90 front end shaking
Sounds to me either your wheels are out of balance or you have a ball joint thats bad, you might for safty sake check to see if you wheels are torqued on properly. I think its most likely the wheels are out of balance.

If the ball joints are bad is that something that can be changed without tearing the front end apart?? Also how do youu test the ball joints to see if they are bad? The tires have been balanced.

RE: 98 S90 front end shaking
To test the ball joints you have to jack up the car so that the wheel or wheels are of the ground. Then you hold the tyre at the top and bottom and shake the the wheel. left hand pushes in and the right hand pushes out if you know what i mean. to check the other components of the front end you just change the location of your hands on the wheel. to check the play in the end links you hols the wheel at 9 and 3 and shake the wheel. any at all play while checking your front end is bad in my books. On volvos i dont know how hard it is to change a ball joint but on most cars you have to pull them of the hub if its a front wheel drive you have to get the axel of the hub to do so.

I jacked up the right fron of the car and did the test for the control are and I have alot of play in the wheel, it feels like 1/4 inch or so. Can the control arms be changed without too much trouble??

They are pretty easy to replace.
