crazy suspension problem

1994 850 turbo wagon. I walked outside to get in my car when I noticed that there was a quarter size dent in my hood coming from underneath. I didn't think to much of it cuz I was in a hurry to be somewhere. While driving I noticed a funny noise every now and again. Then I noticed my hood was moving like it wasnt latched all the way. I pulled to the side of the road and opened the hood and my shock out put shaft was sitting 6 inches above the top plate. It had just gone all the way to the hood and was carrying so much force, it dented and tried to open the hood.

I have Eibach springs with Bilstein HD shocks. Unfortunately I was misimformed that the HD shocks were shortened shocks, they are however performance shocks that replace the OE and are already into the damper when paired with a lowered spring. I am wondering whether the shock blew or the upper spring seat gave way. I cant tell and I am in the middle of replacing the axle too which is bad from 204k miles. I need a breaker bar to get the spindle nut off and until I remove that nut, I dont want to remove the strut to look at it closer and just have to reinstall in order to get the spindle nut off. I only have a borrowed car for today so I need to get everything soon w. out makin a trillion trips. Tight on loot to, so this is just a bundle of joy for me.

If the upper rubber spring seat gave way, would it cause the shock out put to go right through to the hood, or do you think the shock has blown out? When I compress the strut it feels good and there is no visible fluid anywhere. I am lost, need help!!!

RE: crazy suspension problem

when a shock or strut goes bad, it will "oil down" the outside of the casing.
