1982 244DL Wiper Innards "Fell Down"?

Hello! Last Monday I had my windshield wipers replaced and the next day it was pouring so I had the wipers on high while driving for about 40 minutes. I heard a very loud metal sound and then the wipers stopped working. Being that I moved to a very small town that has mechanics who only really work on cars with computers, it's hard to find someone who knows how to do anything on my car. Luckily I found a mechanic who was at least willing to look at it. I bought him a manual and everything to help out.
Well, the wipers have stumped him. There's nothing really specific in the manual addressing what happened. The motor is fine, everything seems fine except for the fact that when he removed my glove box he could see that where the metal armature of the blades inside were once mounted, they were no longer. Like they fell off of where they go? I've done a preliminary search online for replacements in case this is the route I have to go, but I don't even really know what to call the whole mechanical workings of the wipers.
