1984 244; overdrive will not engage
 

I have a 1984 volvo 244 sedan. The "OD Off" light is illuminated on the dash and the car will not shift into overdrive. What is causing this problem? Switch? Transmissions problem? I am considering installing the solenoid bypass kit, but am not sure it will cure the problem. Thoughts or suggestions? Thanks.

Can you turn the light on and off with the switch?
If not then I would look at the relay first.

No, the light does not go on and off...it stays on.
Where is the overdrive relay located?

It is a pain to get to you need to remove the glovebox.
Then it will be behind the center vents. It is a white relay that is pretty long.
Sometimes you might be able to resolder it and it might work.
