Hello all!

I have a 1984 244DL that hasn't run in awhile (like 2 years). It was having problems stalling when hot but then it changed to not starting at all.

So today I replaced the battery as it could not be charged and now it at least cranks but will not start.

Using my Haynes manual, I started down the list of possible problems and wound up at the fuel pre-pump.

I cannot hear anything with the gas cap off at the filler door when my son rotates the key. I have measured 10v across the electrical connector in the trunk leading to the pre-pump. With the fuel pump access cover removed, I cannot feel any movement or vibration when my son rotates the key.

I'm thinking it's not an electrical problem but the pre-pump doesn't work. Thoughts?

Usually a failed pre-pump will not cause a no-start condition. Most times the car will run ok with only the main pump functioning and the fuel tank above half full. You don't mention whether you hear the main pump running. Is it working?

Well it looks like we have another problem. I could not hear or feel the main pump at all.

Looks like tomorrow night, I'll lift the car and test the voltage getting to the pump. If there's voltage (and it's connected) looks like I'll replace the main pump first.

Was there silence from the main pump when you jumpered the fuse or did you just turn the key to the II position to test it? If it is silent when jumpering the fuse, then indeed, check to make sure that you have proper voltage to the pump.

If you performed your test by turning the key to the II position, then I would jumper the fuse to see if it runs. If it runs when jumpering the fuse, then I would suspect a faulty fuel pump relay.

If the car hasn't been started in 2 years and you measure voltage at the pump. (for test purposesyou can also bypass the relay) Rap the pump gently with a small hammer (I prefer a rock) and see if it doesn't start.
I know this sounds crude, but these motors in the pumps are prone to developing flat or dead spots in the armatuer (especially when left in one spot for a very long time).
I had a pump in my 245 that required almost daily abuse causing me to carry a rock on the floor next to the drivers seat.
If the pump does start, the choice is yours...change it...or find a rock

 

note that when you turn the key on, the pumps are only energized for about 1-2 seconds until the engine turns over, then they start again. engine stops, 1 second later, pumps goes off. use the relay jumper bypass to test said pumps (or the dirty trick where you jumper around the fuses in such a way to power the tank pump fuse which is on the switched side of the pump relay and will back feed the main pump too, if you study the wiring diagram)
