1987 240 DL odometer and temp gauge

Hello out there. I just bought a 1987 240 sedan for my son's first car. The car is in pretty good shape mechanically, but there are a few minor isses bugging me. First, the odometer is not working (I read the very extensive post by Eric regarding the the teardown and replacement of the gear(s)). I followed this to the letter and located the 25 tooth gear which was broken so I ordered a new one from Jeff @ Odometer Gears Ltd and put everything back together without success. The instructions also noted that the drive motor for the odometer may need replacement if the gear does not do the trick. Does anybody have another suggestion, or is the motor the next place to investigate, if so, how do I troubleshoot it and where could I get a replacement?
The second item is the temperature gauge (does not move). When I had the cluster out, I reset the temperature compensation board (I believe the sending unit is OK). Is the board something that is a common failure or should I be looking at something else? Any help would be greatly appreciated, great site!
Mike

:DGot the odometer working!!!! Still having problems with the temp gauge. Does anyone know if the temperature compensation board will cause the gauge to be dead?
thanks,
Mike

you can remove the temp comp board. You can find instructions on ipdusa.com where they sell a jumper wire for 15$ I made my own jumper and saved the 15$

What exactly does the jumper do? I definitely want to be able to use the gauge and want it to read accurately. I have seen a few posts that say something along the lines of "the jumper will make the gauge read @ the 9 o'clock position"......

I have jumped my temp gauge and it seems to work pretty well. My understanding of the comp board is that it smooths out the needle so not to alarm you of sudden changes in temp. Honestly without the board I really don't notice a difference. Go for it.

You actually read real temp without the temperature compensation board. For example if you climb a mountain you will notice an increase in temp when you go down said mountain you will notice a decrease. It is much better without compensation board. Gages are to alert you to acutal operating conditions, without board and with jumper it reads accurately.

I did the bypass on the temperature compensation board, but now the gauge always reads hot. Even first thing in the morning the gauge goes almost to the red and when you drive it will go into the red. I think the gauge will be pegged even if the car is slightly hot. Any more suggestions???

One more question on the temp comp board......Once you do the bypass (soldering pin #1 to pin #3), are you supposed to leave the board out??? I know it is a dumb question, but I was not sure if that could be the reason that the gauge is pretty much pegged out in the red after I reinstalled with the board in place????
