Towing with an 88 740 Turbo
IT's got about 270K mi and is well maintained. I some times tow at least one motorcycle weighing about 460lbs and would like to be able to tow two bikes, about the same weight for a combined total of nearly 1000lbs (+trailer and diamondplate deck).
Do you think it's necessary or recommended that I install a supplemental cooling system (something that I think att to the radiator) so I don't burn out my tranny?
Any recommendations as to what to get, where to get it, and how much I can expect to pay (I can probably install it myself) would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

Hey do you have a factory Volvo hitch that is ment for your car. Then if your towing 1000 trailer with 2 bikes 460 lbs each equals 1,920 lbs wich is probably almost your max limit with no brakes on trailer. With brakes its probably 3300 lbs manual and 3500 lbs automatic. People say to stay out of the overdrive ie no top gear. Rev at high rpm 3rd gear. To prevent transmission failer. Should not exceed 90kms.

IIRC, my 92 was rated for 3500 lbs tow, and yeah, stay out of OD and keep your speed sane... Your gas mileage will be a bit sucky at freeway speeds. the AW71 automatic transmissions on turbos already have a pretty substantial cooler, as does the oil system. If you have the M46 4+OD stick shift, same thing, stay out of OD, its weaker than 4th.
ummmm, if your bikes weigh 460 lbs each, thats 920 lbs, there's no way the trailer only weighs 80 lbs. unless I misreading your 'combined total'...
240/740/940's tow reasonably light things just great, I hauled a 16' hobie cat for 1000s of miles with ours. I did have overload springs on both the 240 and 740T.
re hitch, I had the drawtite hitch for both the 240 and 740T, class II, worked fine.
