1991 945 Turbo: Loose Serpentine Belt
I heard a concerning ticking coming from the engine bay of my ‘91 945 Turbo and upon further investigation I believe my accessory/serpentine belt is very loose and is tapping against what I believe to be a plastic guide. I recently changed my alternator but I kinda doubt that’s related? I don’t see any of the usual bolt-style adjusters or any tensioners from above or below, I must be missing something. I’ve tried looking around online but can only really find info on alternator belt tightening. Any help appreciated! You need to change these belts asap! They are falling apart, chunks coming off! They all have adjustments and are not hard to do, and yes they are very loose, and they are not "serpentine", just belts. https://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/fo...ic.php?t=34812

The AC Compressor has one belt, the Alternator another, and the 3rd one is for the power steering pump and water pump.
I believe both the compressor and the power steering are on the same sort of tensioners as the alternator. odds are, each of those needs new pivot bushings, as the old ones harden and loosen. here's the belts off a 91 turbo I used to own. https://photos.smugmug.com/Misc/1991...MG_5866-X4.jpg |
Thank you for the responses! I do apologize for my misuse of terms, I intend on changing the alternator and the belt attached to the power steering pump as they are both coming apart. I am familiar with how to tighten the alternator bolt, and I have seen a similar setup on a 240 with the long adjuster bolt, however on the belt that connects the crank, power steering pump, and water pump I do not see and such adjuster bolts on the power steering pump. Just wondering if anyone has a photo of the location of the tensioner, or whatever tightening mechanism is used. cheers.

Nevermind, I’ve found it, it’s on top of the power steering pump hiding under a couple hoses. |
again, replace the bushings onn the alternator and compressor brackets, preferably with poly (ipdusa has those in poly). not sure if the PS pump bracket has the same bushings or not.

The ac compressor belt was removed by the previous owner as I imagine it was inop, not super worried about its bushing haha. My alternator belt is looking rough but it's tight and the bushing looks a-okay. I'm not sure why or when the power steering/water pump belt worked itself loose, but I will certainly look into any bushings that might be present. I ended up breaking the adjuster bolt on the power steering pump in trying to tighten the belt so I got some spares that I'll go ahead and try and install here in a few days once it warms up a bit (the high for today was 2º F).

ok, i don't see any bushings on the PS pump side...

with the alternator, you want to watch out for any angular/twisting slop in those bushings such that when the belt is tensioned, the pulley isn't inline with the crank pulley.

poly vs soft rubber accessory bushings
Why did you go with poly.? This coming month the timing belt will be changed out and it seems a grand time to do the bushings as well.

the stock rubber alternator bushings start to sag in 5 years, causing the alternator belt to wear out excessively.... the poly ones IPDusa sells will last nearly forever.
