1993 940 starting issues
 

Hello,

I am new to this forum, not a Volvo owner but I help my elderly neighbor keeps hers on the road after her husband passed.
she has a 1993 940 sedan 2.3 non turbo with automatic tranny.
I recently replaced the starter motor since the car was not starting and the battery was good.
Now there is a new starter , the battery is still good but the car still does not start either....;o(
If there is an existing thread on the subject please link it to me and accept my apology if there is not and some of you already experienced the same situation and would not mind briefing us this would be greatly appreciated

does it turn over when you crank it?

if not, a candidate is the park/neutral safety switch which is buried under the gear shift lever.

hello, no it does not crank so I guess I will be looking into that switch

you can bypass the park/neutral safety switch... under the hood there should be a single pink wire stuck into a 2-pin light blue connector shell with nothing connected to it. run a wire from that pink wire to the starter "50" terminal (blue-green wire, I think? NOT the heavy red one!). on my 92 740T, that blue shell is on the left fender somewhere behind the battery and near the ABS module.

replacing/repairing the swithc is a bit of a pain, you pretty much have to pull the whole shifter mechanism apart

volvo 940 no start
 

hi, im new...need help with my 91 940 turbo. i replaced the headgasket and got it to start 2 times and now it just cranks and cranks...pretty sure its now gettig spark, how do i verify if it the ignition control module? and if its now how can i test the crank position sensor? i pulled out the sensor and it looks fine no cracking or flaking...help :(

if you're getting spark, then its not the ICU.

if the CPS wiring looks good, then the CPS is probably fine. anyways, if you're getting spark, your CPS is fine.

first thing I'd suggest would be checking the timing belt timing, make sure that when you crank it around so the dots are all lined up, that they really are all lined up correctly.

after cranking a reasonable amount, pull a spark plug, is it wet? can you smell gas at the tailpipe? with the plug pulled, crank it and verify that you really do have a solid spark.
