Default 1994 940 Ignition coil

Do I have to use the oem style coil as replacement? Or can any canister coil there? It is a non-regina car. Specifically, will any of my old school Ford or MSD coils work there? Is the OE coil internally ballasted or anything special at all? I am sure i could just get my dvom out and check values but, asking is simpler and it's freakin cold out.

Of course it is internally ballasted. I've always used MSD Blaster 2's. The one you want is part #3202 or its equivalent. Google the 3202 and get the resistance and then choose accordingly.

What is the advantage of using an MSD coil instead of the OEM Bosch coil?

A little hotter spark. Supposedly translates to more efficiency. I just like them because they're red!
