1994 940T shifter won't engage park.
 

Yesterday my 940T wagons shifter started to jam up when I went to shift from reverse to park. the first two times I was able to shut it off hold down the gearloc override and get it to shift into park, but now I couldn't even get that to work.

So first I checked to see if I could move the shifter into any other gears, and it moved freely between all the other gears.

Then I climbed underneath to see if I could manually shift it into park at the transmission, and I could, so I had successfully varified that the problem is in the shifter.

Now I just can't figure out how to either remove the shifter or at least disassemble it enough to see whats wrong. I have already detached it underneath the car and taken the center console trim sections off, as well as unbolting the whole shifter box from the body.

The real question is does anyone have any diagrams, or advice on how to get into the shifter itself to fix this problem?

The diagram is for a 740,but should be the same as a 940.Check #25 and #26 and also the rod and it's components that runs through the center of the shifter.

First, if you have a "shift lock" make sure it is all the way disengaged. Then check your shift linkage and shift link bushings underneath. Shifter could be sloppy and have play due to bad or loose linkage or bad shift link bushings. Maybe your shift linkage worn or disconnected form the shifter shaft. Maybe shift link bushings are bad? Even though you can shift by hand if linkage or bushings are bad will it not shift right from above. Also, could be a week spring in the shifter itself you can replace the spring but you have to pull the top off the shifter...not real easy to do most people replace the entire shifter if it is indeed bad but I haven't seen many bad shifters so I would definately check your shift linkage and bushings first.

First of all it's the other shifter, the one were the button you have to press to make it shift is on the front of the handle, not the top (The button that turns off overdrive is on the backside of the handle)

Secondly I wound up just taring it apart and it seems my version of #25 broke in half.

So I went up to the junkyard pulled out a differently broken shifter and out of the two built one working shifter.
