1995 volvo 940 SLUGGISH PERFORMANCE, EXCESSIVE FUEL CONSUMPTION

Hi! I bought this car and it does not have enough power.
I changed the spark plug wires, (volvo),the distributor cap, (bosh) the rotor, (auto zone) and the cps, (aftermarket).
I have not changed the spark plugs yet.
I got the oil changed today because i bought this car recently.
It have crankcase pressure build up.
It is dripping oil from the front seal.
Any ideas how to restore power to this car?
Thank you.
Hector.

This is not a powerful car to begin with, 114hp as new! It's all relative, what are you used to? I like my B230s but I am not after power. Hard to say if you are indeed lacking power due to a mechanical fault or the car is just giving you all it has...
You have to clear the flame trap/separator to help the seals, then see what seal still leaks and replace it. That, won't give you more power however. New spark pugs might help if what's there now is worn plugs.

a properly running 940 non-turbo will get around 25 MPG in town if you're not leadfooting it, and maybe almost 30 (28-29) on long highway trips cruising at a steady 65mph, if the car isn't too loaded, and doesn't have stuff on the roof (roof rack bicycles really drag down your freeway mileage at higher speeds).

Hi!
Hector here.
Answer to Lev: The B230 should give me more power than what i am getting.
I had other 940 non turbos, and this really feels sluggish.
I am going to work on the spark plugs, and i think that that is going to be the problem, if the plugs look like the rotor that i changed.
About the flame trap; yes i am going to remove it and NOT install a new one.
That and removing the gunk from the crankcase should do the trick.
Also i am going to install a bosh rotor.
Thank you Lev.

Answer to Pierce: Yes, it should give me more mileage.
I was driving a 940 non turbo from zip 91402 to 93550 and i was getting about 460 miles with a full tank of gas (20 gallons).
I am getting about 320 on flat surface with this 940.
So i think it has to do with the spark plugs.
Thank you Pierce.

Get that flame trap sorted out and also change the fuel filter it's a pretty important maintenance item a lot of people miss and it will cause a lot of fuel consumption and poor performance.

good luck to you

Hi, hector here.
Changed the spark plugs, the bosch plugs look very good, the gap was .029 so they were fairly new.
I have not done the flame trap yet, it will be done today.

Does the fuel pressure regulator affect the performance of the car?
Thank you.
Hector.

yes, very much so. too much fuel pressure makes the car run too rich. not enough, runs too lean. blown fuel pressure regulator membrane causes it to squirt fuel into the vacuum line and from there into the manifold, causing the car to run WAY too rich
