240 engine in a 740?

I have an engine from my old 89' 240DL wagon that my son totalled. I recently ran across a '91 740 non-turbo for sale with a bad engine.

How difficult would it be to swap my old 240 engine into the 740? I know they are basically the same engine in both but are the sensors, wiring harness points, etc. basically the same?

what do you mean by "bad engine"?

rod through the block bad? or blown head gasket bad? oil starvation? ..etc.

The biggest difference is the distributor was mounted on the back of the head, on the 740 vs. the 240 with it in the front of the block.

From my understanding, the car was overheated, and ran out of oil. Now I am getting this info from the seller who was told this by his mechanic. The mechanic said it needs a new engine and the owner just decided to dump the car.

Regarding the placement of the distributer, if I remember correctly, the distributer on my 240 engine was mounted in the front with the shaft going right into the engine block (not the head). Does that mean the 740 has a different engine block? If so, then it doesn't sound very easy swap.

Thanks for the quick replies....

This deals with a swap in the other direction:

A 240 motor has a plug in the back of the head and the 740 has a plug in the block ... so the casts are the same. Its a difference of where the drive gear for the distributor is located.

Eggzachary, I believe there is a difference in the intermediate shaft, 240's have a drive gear on them, 740's do not. 740's do have a slotted cam for the distributor drive to fit in.

Thats kinda the reason why a lot of 740 turbo guys want the A cam but a slotted A cam is as rare as hens teeth.

Thanks for all of the replies. Unfortunately I missed the deal. At $250 for the car with no rust, it went faster than I could even look at it.

Thanks again...
