740 Transmission Question

I have a 87 volvo 740 turbo that lost 2nd gear. The junk yard by me says they have a good trans out of a 240. Will that work? I'm kind of new to volvos and I've tried doing research on it and haven't really gotten a straight answer. Anything helps.

Thanks

240 models: AW70 & AW71 M46 with OD M47 5 speed manual

740 models: AW70 & AW71 M46 with OD M47 5 speed manual

Both models were produced with other transmissions but the above transmissions will work with minimal if any extra mods...

example: if yours is an automatic...you can slap on a manual but will need drive shaft and trans cross member support etc...and/or the trans Bell housing from your model...just take off yours and slap it on the donor.....AUTOMATIC TO AUTOMATIC IS THE SIMPLEST...OR manual to manual...

Take note of your transmission, cross member, bell housing, cables and compare them to the donor...

It is not hard to take off but I have struggled with the very top two bolts on the bell housing since I don't own an impact gun...you need a freaking long extension and an air or battery power impact gun to undo those two bolts..the rest is pretty easy...you can support the transmission with a good jack and place a piece of wood behind the cyl head because as you slide off the trans, your engine tilts towards the firewall...

a 740 turbo automatic probably has the heavy duty AW71. a 240 almost certainly has the AW70, which is a light duty automatic.

if its a 4-speed with the overdrive switch, then its probably an M46, if its a straight 5-speed, its an M47. The M46 are supposed to be stronger. an m46 is an m46, but the bell housings might differ a little between the versions. switching from an m46+OD to a M47 might require a different length drive shaft, and for sure would require the different stickshift linkage of the M47.

Not recommended to swap M46 for a M47 as it doesn't handle the torque of the turbo motor. Installation wise no problem--the linkages get swapped as well, all fits fine.
