'82 244 Fires right up but dies if not given gas...

Hi everyone! So my problem child, '82 244 with only 80k original miles, seems to have issues every year. I just got her back two weeks ago from the only mechanic in a small town that will touch a car with no computer-replaced spark plugs/wires. She ran fine until this morning. Fired right up, but immediately died. I figured since it was like -7 she was just cold, so I tried again, and again. It didn't seem right so I tried again but giving her gas and she stayed on, until I removed my foot from the gas pedal.

Automatically I assume maybe it's the fuel pumps, but those were replaced a couple years ago-could they be dead already? I checked the fuses for both pumps and they seemed fine. After browsing the forums I saw a possible other culprit, the AMM/AMF? Could that be causing the car to act like this? I want to unplug it as people have suggested for reasons, but honestly I'm not entirely sure where this plug is to check. Any ideas/suggestions?

I'm not familiar with the early '80s model but after checking around on the threads here on the forum, I found this thread that describes how to tell whether your car is a KJet fuel injection vs. an LH Jet:

https://volvoforums.com/forum/volvo-...-system-52155/

The KJet system doesn't have an AMM while the LH 2.0 Jet does. If you confirm that you have the LH Jet, the AMM is along the path of the air intake. You can see a large accordian type hose that runs from the intake manifold up to a hard plastic tube mounted on the drivers side fender well. There should be some wires plugged into the plastic tube. That plastic tube is the AMM. Unplug the connector only while the ignition is OFF. Once unplugged, see if the engine starts. Shut the engine off before plugging it back in.

Given the symptoms, it may be the idle control valve that may need cleaning as they do get carbon in them and may stick - especially when cold.

Thanks so much for your response! Ok it's apparently a Kjet which means it doesn't have an AMM? I guess that changes things a bit in regards to troubleshooting that bit.

k-jet has a fuel distributor, and the injectors don't have any wires to them

k-jet volvos are something of a lost art as Volvo abandoned that technology circa 1983 for LH (electronic injection). VW and Mercedes continued to use K Jet until the early 90s.

Hey kilkennycats,

Were you ever able to resolve this issue? I have a 1982 244 DL that is having the same issue. It sat for about 15+ years. I recently started working on it. Replaced fuel tank, in-tank pump and filter, in-line pump, fuel filter. Flushed the fuel lines. Replaced the injectors, spark plugs, coolant flush, oil change, new battery, etc... After all of that, she fired right off. But then died as soon as I let off the gas. Then it won't start again unless I let it sit a few days. It will fire right off again but then die if I let off the gas.
