83 240 Apparent fuel System issues

Is the internal fuel pump electrically linked to the external one? If the internal pump fails, do you lose power to the circuit.? I feel like my problem is something simple that I am overlooking.(frustrating) I used to be a pretty knowledgable volvo tech, but left about 20 yrs ago. I love the cars, that is why I took on this disaster. I am determined to get this right so bear with me guys/gals. That #5 fuse, has no power to it. If I put power to it, the external pump runs, Since the external pump runs, am I to assume that there is also power to the internal one, but it is mechanically bad?

I don't remember the fuse numbers but here is a good reference for diagnosing fuel pump issues:

In the Tank - 240 Volvo Tank Pump and Sender

Two out of the three 240s that I have owned have had rusting problems on the tank sending unit. Basically the place where the wires enter the tank gets rusty and the connection gets broken there. It wouldn't hurt to open the access panel in the trunk to take a look at the top of the sending unit. While you are back there you can check the voltage to the in-tank pump.

Good luck

Many Many Thanks

I love and enjoy working on these cars. I stopped doing it for a living when times became a little rough while raising kids. I was a Viet Nam era medic, so I went back to the medical field. I used to be ASE certified. I am beginning to study for the certifications again. I hope to volunteer to help at a school shop program. ( I will retire soon) This whole diatribe was to let you know how fortunate you guys are to have all this wonderful info & illustrations so readily available. Even in the hospital I tend to reach for a book, when some youngster will say "just google it" and find the info in a coupla clicks. Thanks for all your help.I hope to be reading and interacting with you guys as long as I can.
