'86 740 Wagon, No Keys

Good Evening,

I have just purchased my first Volvo, an '86 740GL Wagon. It was purchased from a police auction and I have no keys for it.

What are my options for getting keys made?

If I give the dealer the serial number can they create a new key(s) for me? Is the ignition key the same as the door key? The doors are open and I found some of the original car documentation in the glove box, but nothing regarding the key(s). I was hoping I might find a key-code (or something) that could be used to create the key(s).

Is my only option to get a locksmith to re-key the car?

Thank you in advance for your assistance.

New 740 Owner!

I can answer one part of that question...one key will open all the doors, trunk and start the car.

Hello Fellow Newbie,

If it helps, I have an 86 240 DL wagon and one key fits both ignition and locks.

Best to check with the dealer to see if there is a key code stamped onthe outside body of the door lock cylinder. One time I was able to get a new key from a nissan dealer using this code.

I guess at a minimum you would take off the interior door handles and panel to look inside. There should be some sort of vapour barrier plastic sheet that needs to be securely reattached when reassembling. maybe with light and a little mirror you can see the key code, and failing that, just pull out the lock cylinder (undo linkage and remove retaining clip). Any locksmith should be able to match a key to a lock cylinder in hand. Cheers and good luck.

Assuming the locks have not been changed over the years any Volvo dealer can cut you the keys from the VIN number. You may have to prove legal title to the car but that is not a hard job in your case.

Volvo dealer should be able to get you a keyby the VIN# for about $25. I just got one for a '91 940SE, and it was a high security to boot... And if none of the locks were replaced you'll be all set.

I got a key last year for $9 with just the VIN and registration - cut on the spot for my 88 740. The ignition was rekeyed at some point (I got that with the car), but all the doors and such match the dealer key.

The laser cut keys (my 96 850 has one) are much more expensive and I don't think can be cut at the dealer.
