90 740 GL Gas mileage sucks?
What gives, do these cars not get very good gas mileage or is there something I can do to improve this? The plugs and wires have been changed and I am running 93 octane. Also I cant get my idling adjusted right either.
a 740 nonturbo should get about 25mpg on the highway if you're not leadfooting it. 22 or so 'around the county'. a turbo gets more like 18(county)/22(highway). I say county because I do very little of actual city driving, its more get on a highway, go fast for 5-7 miles, get off, a few long blocks on an throughway, repeat.
yeah that sounds about like my driving, and the mileage you stated is about what I am getting
Typhoon, yeah I should search around more , sometimes get frustrated looking for the info, but I understand what you mean

its just hard getting used to the mileage, my past several cars range from a 93 corolla, 94 civic hatch, 92 civic hatch 89 crx with integra swap, 94 camry, etc... etc... so Im used to 4 cylinder 5-speeds in super light cars so it is a drastic change. My last was the 93 corolla it was automatic but was still getting on average 30 miles per gallon with 276K on the original motor. After putting in a 50K motor and doing all new seals and belts, I was hoping for more but a Jeep Liberty that pulled out in front of me sealed its fate so I never got to check the new mileage, since I just put the final touches on the motor transplant that day.
yup, my jetta (1800cc, 5-speed) got 30mpg too.... but the 745 is easily twice as roomy, quieter, smoother riding, can tow more, etc etc. in a collision between a civic and a 740, guess who wins?

Im guessing the civic would be heading for the scrapyard and you would have to dust of the 740 and get back to driving
This is my wife's old '93 Volvo 960 wagon after it had been hit really hard from behind while stopped by a mercedes. gave my wife a serious case of whiplash. the benz was scrap. A 960 and 740/940 are all pretty much the same thing chassis-wise.

I always worried about the safety of that 3rd row rear facing seat in a tail end collision. Guess I really shouldn't have worried. the car is obviously bent, but it drove home fine.
Some other views:

sadly, cost-to-repair would have exceeded value of car, so it was scrapped :-/
I still miss that car, it was a dream long hauler for road trips. the 960 straight 6 may be an expensive motor to maintain but damn its smooth and sweet running.
