940 transmission type?

how do I tell if my transmission is an AW70, AW71, AW72, and if it has the lockup feature? Car is a 1991 940SE Wagon w/ the B230FT engine. Is the transmission encoded in the VIN or otherwise on the serial # plate?

No, but there's a tag on the side of the transmission thates specifically what tranny you have. If it's a 940, you have a lock up converter. So..if it's n/a, you have an AW70L, turbo AW71L. The AW72 was only used with the B234 dual cam motor.

k, thanks. is that tranny tag on the side something I can see when its mounted in the car ?

what about limited slip differential? did these 91 940SE turbo wagons come with those? I have the VADIS DVD set (2005 version) and its ambiguous on this.

I thought all 90+ turbo wagons got a locking diff from factory?

I don't think it'll be a lock up trans with a factory turbo, so probably an AW71. Could be wrong though.
I think an SE will have an LSD, higher trim levels of Volvos often did.

Andrew may very well be right about the turbo's not getting lock up converters. Those cars are a bit new for me. As for the definitive test as to what rear end is in your car....you will need 1 can of brake cleaner and a couple of rags. There is a label on the left hand axle tube facing aft. It's almost always covered bt undercoating. Brake cleaner will remove the undercoating. If you use carb cleaner, you will end up with a shiny white clean label...wiped clean of information as the carb cleaner removes the ink!.
The label will have the axle ratio such as 3.31, 3.73, 3.91 or 4.10 as well as a notation like 1030, 1031, 1040 or 1041. The 1040's are the later ones and the 41's are the lockers. the 30's were 240 axles.

I seem to remember reading that the 940 turbos up until 1993 had a locking differential (as opposed to limited slip) as standard equipment. After 1993 it was part of a winter package, which was optional. If you have a '94 with heated seats, then presumably you have the winter package. My understanding is that although the package was technically an option, the majority of cars sold here had it.

fwiw, my 940SE is a 91 w/ heated seats but no headlight wipers. it does have heated mirrors (I thought winter packages usually included the headlight wipers)

I tried to crawl under teh car and see the differential tag, but its pretty cramped under there and I'm a big guy, probably gonna have to get out my floor jack and jack stands if I really want to satisfy my curiosity.

k, the tranny says 03-71 and 1208, just like the one in your pic, with 642 stamped under the 1208 (and VADIS shows 1208642 is the correct tranny). man, thats at a hard angle to see, my skull won't fit under the car and my floor jack has gone AWOL ($#@$#@ teenage son probably 'borrowed' it and left it somewhere). So, this is likely not the lockup torque converter?

ah, and I actually had a can of brake-kleen left over from ages ago. phew, thats some thick black goo on there, but the brake cleaner did in fact soften it so I could wipe it off the label, which says 3.73 and 1216360 (no 1040/etc, but I found that p/n in VADIS, 12163601 · SP · Rear axle · Live rear axle Differential brake. -1991. MARKED 1041, so that is the locking differential.

I think Andrew is right about the lockup transmissions not being in the turbo models. I dont have one.

I found this table of transmission part numbers in the 2005 VADIS CD... indeed, the 91 US 940's with turbos didn't get the lockup torque converter. http://hogranch.com/files/volvo/Volv...nsmissions.pdf
